Getting ready…

Boa tarde tudo mundo!

Just a quick one from Patrimonio da Penha, 13km from the site of the rainbow which officially ended just over a week ago. But of course, with the caravan the gathering never ends, we’re fulfilling the vision of one long rainbow gathering from Brazil to Guatemala!! The caravan is still using the site of rainbow for its preparations but we have consensed to leave no later than the 9th of March. We probably have our first gig at the school in Santa Marta on March 9th, we will camp in the quadra, the… I don’t know… gym hall or assembly space or whatever you want to call it. It will be the first public performance of our show. Still to be confirmed, though.I will go there tomorrow to confirm it.

I’ve been in Penha for a few days to sort out my life before I return to rainbowland tomorrow. I was in the horse caravan and I still have a horse, so arranging a good home for him before I leave has been a priority. I’ve also recorded 22 horse caravan songs before we all split up… though the horse caravan will continue, but with mostly new faces. I wish them all the best on their journey, in the end we’re all doing exactly the same thing, just in slightly different ways.

I’m getting a lot of good news from the caravan. It’s all coming together beautifully. They’re a focussed group of about 20 right now, working very hard on getting the show ready. A couple of days ago they all put out a massive forest fire, it’s happened a few times now, actually. There’s a pyromaniac on the loose… It’s mostly likely a message from hardcore Christian locals to the “immoral hippies” to “get out now”. Not to worry, though, most locals around here love us.

And I just received some potentially great news about vehicles… Gili and Matti, who went to Belo Horizonte to look for combis, apparently found one for 1500 reais! And it’s roadworthy! That’s completely unheard of and a little bit suspicious but as we have exactly 1550 reais in our vehicle magic we don’t have much of a choice. Even if we have to spend another few thousand to repair it, it’s still an extremely good bargain. Manifestation… If they buy it, whoever is going to have the vehicle registered in their name has to go there as soon as possible to start the presumably long registration process.

All caravan members who want to will be able to upload posts and photos on this page. Email worldrainbowcaravan@gmail.com and identify yourself to receive a special contributors’ password. For the rest of this site I will make an administrator’s group, at the moment it’s only me but I hope that will change soon…

Very exciting days. At times frustrating, very hard work and full of boring practicalities, but it’s REALLY HAPPENING! We’re becoming a real community, a real nomadic tribe. But who knows what will happen when we hit the road… who’s in and who’s out… and who’s in between? No one really knows…

Our consensuses

We have built this intentional community from scratch through consensuses made in caravan vision councils at the Brazil gathering. These consensuses are on the one hand the cornerstones of our communal existence, but as we are all allergic to rules they must also be seen as nothing but flexible guidelines. Common sense and the natural flow of group energy will always prevail.

The consensuses include:

  • The caravan will follow basic rainbow guidelines in communal spaces, such as in communal vehicles, communal tents, our kitchen and around the sacred fire. This includes:
    • We want to be free from alcohol, chemical drugs, electronics and meat.
    • We are non-violent and we want to be free from weapons.
    • Only wood in the sacred fire.
    • We make decisions by consensus in talking circles.
    • Everyone is welcome to come and go as they please. The caravan is completely open.
    • We have no leaders, we are all responsible.
    • We share a great environmental responsibility. We must do our utmost to minimise our environmental impact wherever we are.
    • We want to be free from commercialism internally in the caravan.
    • No photos in communal spaces unless specifically pre-arranged.
    • Unlike most rainbow gatherings, the caravan allows dogs. We have also opted for full openness on the internet in order for family to connect with us.
  • We are collecting money internally from caravan members and also from external sources to buy one or more communal vehicles. Whoever buys a share in a vehicle will receive a proportional amount, whether gain or loss, when the vehicle is sold (most likely in Colombia as it’s very expensive to ship vehicles to Panama). Owning a share in a communal vehicle does not give any special rights in terms of usage. Where and when the vehicle goes and who and what goes in it are communal decisions.
  • Any vehicle must be accepted through consensus before it can become communal. Private vehicles can also join the caravan but only communal vehicles will receive money for petrol and maintenance from our magic hat.
  • Magic hat, our communal money, will go towards:
    • Organic, non-industrial, integral vegan food, as far as we can help it. (But we will accept food donations of anything other than meat.)
    • Basic, natural medicine.
    • Petrol / diesel, oil, basic vehicle maintenance, insurance when required. Repairs to be considered on a case by case basis.
  • The first full moon, on March 8th, will be celebrated at the site of the Brazil gathering or nearby. We will leave the site no later than March 9th. This gives us more time to prepare our show and to organise vehicles.
  • We will create a gathering in Alto Paraiso, Brazil, for the April full moon. (This gathering will probably start 1-2 weeks before full moon and end the day after full moon in order to give ourselves more time to travel what’s probably going to be the longest leg on the journey the moon after.)
  • Our overall route is as follows: Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, (El Salvador?), Guatemala.
  • We will gather in Panama for the full moon of August 31st. (This early consensus will help the family in Panama to organise their national gathering to coincide with the arrival of the caravan. It also gives the Rainbow Peace Fleet, a group of sailboats, a rough idea when the caravan wants to cross the sea from Colombia to Panama – early August! As we will probably have to sell our vehicles in Colombia, we invite North American caravans down to Panama for this gathering to meet us and help us get to Guatemala!)

Bicycle caravan!

The bicycle caravan has already set off in the direction of Alto Paraiso… and the rest of the caravan are wishing you guys a beautiful journey. The combi / hitchhikers will be moving too fast for the bikers to keep up, unfortunately. But we really hope to meet up before Alto to share a few camp sites on the way. Paul and the rest of you, please keep us updated of your whereabouts in comments on this thread, and then I’m sure we’ll find each other somehow… Love!

The original vision

The “open letter to the world”, below, emerged from the February 2011 Argentina world rainbow vision council. This is how the story of the caravan began. The letter is reproduced here in a slightly edited version to keep it up to date and not cause confusion.

Beloved rainbow family of living light,

This is an open letter from the world rainbow family to all rainbows everywhere. We are many brothers and sisters, tribes, clans and communities in many places around the world, but we are ONE family. Our message concerns us all.

2012 is the year of the rainbow, 2012 is the year of unification! The world family will gather in Brazil in January before moving north in a caravan that will link communities and celebrate eight consecutive full moons on our way to Guatemala, where we will join hands with the North American caravan to build a permanent home for us all! Finally, many of us will observe the end of the Mayan calendar in Palenque, Mexico, in December.

We are an open group of brothers and sisters from around the world who are keeping the focus to turn this vision into reality, and we invite all family everywhere to participate, focalise, and to translate and spread this message.

Let us hold hands, unite our intentions, shine our lights and join all hearts together. The energy is spiralling, more and more brothers and sisters are joining this path and pledging their support every day. This is not a dream, not anymore; it really is happening. The vision is clear, the way to realise it is up to us.

Love and light,

Maira, Rubia, Juevez, Justin, Fly, Diego and Martin

This is the world rainbow gathering consensus from Argentina:

“The 2012 world rainbow gathering starts in Brazil on new moon January 23rd and ends in Guatemala on new moon December 12th. It includes:

  • A one month gathering in Brazil (joining the national) in the state of Espirito Santo from new moon January 23rd to new moon February 21st.
  • An eight month caravan sweeping north through South and Central America via many meeting points.
  • A one month gathering in Guatemala from new moon November 13th to new moon December 12th.”

The Brazil vision council will consense for the 2013 world rainbow gathering, Guatemala will consense for 2014.

We want to create well-run, healthy and happy gatherings with safe water sources and strong welcome centres.

The first part of the 2012 world rainbow gathering will be joined with the Brazil national gathering, which is already consensed to be held in the state of Espirito Santo.

We are calling a scout council in Caparao, Espirito Santo, on July 19th 2011.

The caravan from Brazil to Guatemala will create a rainbow bridge between two continents. It can take any form imaginable; we can walk, cycle, hitchhike, drive or spread our wings and fly. We envision the caravan as the centre point of a multitude of art, ecology and educational projects, including the performance of shows. Our path will be a process of learning; we can visit sustainable communities to participate in permaculture projects, to share knowledge and spread seeds, and to bring all this new energy with us to Guatemala.

We already have several invitations but we would like to share our light with more people, places and communities in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala, between February and November 2012.

We hope for a small armada of RainBoats to help us bypass the impenetrable Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama; the Rainbow Peace Fleet have already offered their support and many more boats will hopefully join. We plan to cross a bridge over the Panama Canal on foot in order to re-establish the trans-American energy flow broken by the canal; another caravan of northern eagles (the North American family) could meet our caravan of southern condors in a magical ceremony right there on the Puente de las Americas!

Whatever our intentions, projects and means of transport may be, we want a few vehicles to be the moving headquarters and heartquarters of the caravan, carrying pots and pans and communal tents, keeping magic hat and always providing a central camp with meals for all. We will create improvised mini-rainbow gatherings in various meeting points along the way, at least every full moon.

The first caravan vision council will be held at the Espirito Santo gathering approximately one week before full moon. Come and shape the caravan with your ideas!

Part of the vision for the one month Guatemala gathering is to create a more sustainable rainbow. At previous gatherings we have been almost entirely dependent on the use of magic hat money as a means of exchange for food from mostly unsustainable sources. It is important that rainbow stays true to its original idea of living in nature but “leaving no trace”, but it could be possible to use an adjacent piece of land for a bit of “rainbow gardening”. Scouts and local family in Guatemala are intending to plant seeds before the rainy season so that we can harvest during the gathering and therefore make the rainbow more sustainable and less dependent on the monetary system.

Taken one step further, this could be the beginning of the first Peace Village, a permanent home for our family! We could buy the land with the intention of freeing it from ownership. The rainbow family is everyone; land belonging to the rainbow family therefore belongs to everyone and no one. We would create a free piece of land which would sustainably support a group of free people living communally in peace with Mother Earth. The scouts will become the first caretakers of this land.

We could create an open and transparent legal entity like a company, charity / NGO or trust that can hold money and land on behalf of the whole family, then raise an online magic hat in order to purchase the land.

The Peace Village is connected to but different from the rainbow gathering; they will co-exist side by side and feed each other energy but remain separate entities.

Local family, including Mayans and established communities, are already working in support of this vision.

The first scout council in Guatemala is being planned for September 21st 2011 (unconfirmed).

From Guatemala, we are all invited across the Mexican border to “the global rainbow gathering of the tribes” in Palenque from December 1st to December 31st in order to celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar. Another part of the family is dedicated to focalising this event.

We believe rainbow works when communication is open and everyone is included and allowed the privilege of taking their share of the responsibility to make it happen. Join our open focalising group if you have energy to share.
